Healing Ourselves, Healing the Earth
As we enter Earth Day Week, it is important to acknowledge the part we play in the process of taking care of the thread within us and the threads that connect to all other life on this beautiful planet.
“At this very moment, the Earth is above you, below you, all around you, and even inside you. The Earth is everywhere. You may be used to thinking of the Earth as only the ground beneath your feet. But the water, the sea, the sky, and everything around us comes from the Earth. Everything outside us and everything inside us comes from the Earth. We often forget that the planet we are living on has given us all the elements that make up our bodies. The water in our flesh, our bones, and all the microscopic cells inside our bodies all come from the Earth and are part of the Earth. The Earth is not just the environment we live in. We are the Earth and we are always carrying her within us.”~Thich Nhat Hanh
The Five Element and Meridian System is based on the wisdom of nature. The earth and your body function in an interconnected way . All of the elements support, balance and harmonize each other while creating greater integrity in the function of individual parts within the unified system.
It’s All About Relationship
This means, for example, that Wood Element, prominent in spring.is a time of new growth, planning and hope coming out of the seaon of winter and moving toward summer. On the physical level it is related to your Liver and Gallbladder. Its primary sense is your vision. This element ‘s primary purpose is processing toxins, anger and frustration. The coherent spirit of this element creates growth, optimism, hope and unhesitating action.
If the Wood Element pathway is unable to naturally flow, it is a signal to look at the qualities of relationship with other meridians. There is a place for each of the elements on each pathway. This includes the wisdom, support and nurture from each of the other organ systems and seasons to create harmony and balance. This collaboration enhances communication that results in more optimal functioning throughout the system.
This happens by identifying the issue in the primary element itself. For the purpose of this article, we will continue to consider Wood Element, and the beneficial qualities of some of these relationships. Let’s take a closer look at the Shen Cycle (mother-child or feeding relationship), Ko Cycle (limiting or balancing relationship) and the order or disharmony between element in the overall flow of energy in the body. By working with other elements, it is possible to support the function of the identified element to enhance greater harmony and balance throughout the system.
Shen Cycle: Water on Wood to Create Harmony
In nature water is vital to feeding new growth. This is a nourishing Mother-Child relationship.Throughout nature water is life. In spring, water nourishes new growth. It is the creative juice that allows for new beginnings and change.
Water Element places you more in the natural flow of life and its creative energy. This allows you to be more clearly in touch with your inner reserves of cleverness to support your vision for life as you let go of fear while pacing yourself over time. When you drink water you nourish the communication within your bio-energetic body-mind-spirit system, and this can diminish pain while also supporting more optimal brain-body connection. The fluids of your body circulate, transform, support, and protect your body-mind-spirit system. These fluids also allow you to let go of that which is not beneficial to your system.
Ko Cycle: Metal on Wood for Balance
New growth emerges from the Earth with purpose. It provides shelter, food and space for new life. Metal Element qualities offers value when considering new beginnings. These points on Wood Element meridians offer strength and courage in your life that call you to new possibilities. This is helpful when your life feels meaningless or your self esteem is low. This point invites you to recognize who you truly are and to express your unique qualities. It supports you in finding value with your choices when you have more than one decision to make while letting go of what no longer serves you.
Fire on Wood to Create Order and Harmony in the System
“In nature nothing exists alone.”~Rachel Carson
Fire Element follows Wood on the Five Element and Meridian Wheel. At times the following element can be out of balance, and this affects the previous element’s ability to function and flow. In this case, Fire Element, the child of Wood Element might be challenged with imbalance related to discernment, intolerance, long term agitation, anxiety, or anger. Fire Element points on the Wood Element Meridian bring warmth through humor and compassion.
This is helpful when you need more joy and creativity to relieve the congestion in your Wood Element locked in anger and judgment to create balance. Fire on Wood assists with sorting through what is truly in your heart for your greatest good aligned with your vision for life. From this place Wood Element can then take optimism and hope to take action that will create positive growth in your life while connecting to your heart.
Earth on Wood Element for Grounding
The soil of the Earth itself provides roots and stability during growth. Earth Element offers nurture, support, and grounding as you process change. It allows you to feel more at home in your body no matter where you are in this world. This can be especially beneficial when you feel toppled or overwhelmed by feelings of frustration or obstacles in your life. So it can be helpful when you are stuck in details without the ability to access a long-term plan. Earth Element points on Wood Element Meridian bring you back to your center through your senses with your core self.
The Earth is Speaking
The Earth reports in on what is happening to its resources and elements through Earth events and climate change. So it is important to acknowledge that the elements and systems of the earth are letting us know the importance of connecting the dots between water, the soil, sun, air, weather changes, plants, animals and trees in relation to each other to give value and quality care to life in all its forms.
The planet tends to imbalances to create greater harmony and balance. In the braid of connection with the Earth we are entwined in every breath, every glass of water we drink, every plant we are nourished by, every animal that brings gifts to the world for survival and companionship.. It is vital to listen to the messages the Earth is sending to each of us. You can feel and see the changes happening all around you. This conversation is happening with your choices impacting the whole.Through mindfulness you can be the needed element for sustainable and regenerative support and change on the planet locally and at large.
“There is no difference between healing ourselves and healing the Earth.”
~Thich Nhat Hanh, Love Letter to the Earth

Harmonizing the Heart and Home of Your Body-Mind System
The Chinese Five Element and Meridian System acknowledges the relationship within your body-mind system. This includes the layers of interacting emotions, mental attitudes, and quality of life energy available based on the quality of these interactions.
This means that during the summer when the sun, the major solar fire source for the Earth is prominent, the Fire Element, the heart and home of the Emperor in Chinese Medicine of your body-mind system relies on the other elements in your system, and how you interact with all the other parts of your body-mind system.. This is related to your heart, your connection with others, level of life energy, and the value you give to your experiences. All of these factors affect how you use your energy each day of your life.
Inner World
Fire Element plays a prominent role in all the other element’s attributes based on the balanced flow of energy between all within the larger body-mind system. In this article, we will explore two primary relationships with Fire Element: Wood Element that directly nourishes Fire Element and Water Element that limits Fire Element to create a greater balance between your organ and meridian system.
An imbalance between these elements can show up with persistently becoming agitated or depressed. This would be related to your Wood-Fire Element relationship. You might also become resentful and withdrawn in your relationships, feeling stuck, and victimized. The impact might be an overall sense of sadness, lack of energy, or an increase of feeling emotionally flooded. This would indicate a Fire and Water imbalance.
Time
For this purpose, let’s talk about two primary relationships with Fire Element that affect expansive and limiting qualities. The sun is your major connection to your body-mind system. You need Vitamin D3 from the sun for heart health. Yet, the amount of time you spend in the sun is important to get a daily dose within the boundaries of what is healthy for you.
If you have ever built a fire, you know that wood feeds the fire. In the Chinese Medicine System, Wood nourishes Fire Element. Wood Element deals with your liver and gall bladder/ Processing toxins and fats are primary roles. And, it is important to look at harmonizing your system for the emotional and mental impact of stress on your heart based on this relationship. The Wood Element influences how you see the world as it is associated with your vision.
This depends on your resonance with Wood Element’s coherent qualities of seeing the world through the lens of hope and optimism, or, Wood Element’s non-coherent qualities of toxic anger and depression. This impacts the energy you have for new projects, how much or how little you wish to be connected with others, and how you discern or set boundaries with your own life energy and your own time.
Fire Element is essential to set boundaries in a loving way. This resonance is different than cutting yourself off from another person or cutting yourself off from nourishing care for self.
When you resonate with setting boundaries in a loving way, it is essential to realize that this extends in both directions. Loving boundaries for you and the other person. There is a large spectrum in practicing this skill and to the extent, you need to set boundaries based on your own energy level and energy exchange with the other person or situation. In some cases, it is simply taking a brief pause with another person. In other cases, it can mean that you need to look at your inner needs in setting boundaries by prioritizing what is most needed. It might also need that you need to delegate some responsibilities or look at places where you feel long-standing issues have dealt a blow to your self-esteem or disrupted your sense of direction.
Self-regulation is a balance between fire, water, and wood. Inspiration over time, using your time wisely, and making space for self-care all contribute to greater harmony and balance within so that you are better able to take part in life in ways that create nourishment from joy, love, and connection.
Space
There are different ways to set boundaries. It is sometimes beneficial to expand your boundaries while at the same time pacing yourself with self-care in mind. For this purpose, let’s talk about the primary role of Water Element on Fire Element.
Back to the analogy of building a fire, think about the result of dumping water on a flame. If there is too much fire, you need water to regulate the flame. While a wildfire would require more water, and a small fire less water, the internal emotional response for using water as a remedy could be a result of caution, need for calm, resentment, or fear.
Too much fear-based on resentment or feeling victimized seriously limits your ability to experience love, joy, and connection. Water Element’s coherent aspect though is a remedy for creating greater balance through resonating with your need to go with the flow instead of being in the fight-flight or freeze mode. The Water Element affects your hearing, and how you listen to others, essential for a relationship, feeling understood, and communication.
In this case, non-coherent Wood Element would show up as emotional flooding without the ability to set boundaries with self and others based on the disconnect from Earth Element nurture and support. Look at any body of water, and you will see Earth Element creating boundaries on shores and banks. When there are no boundaries, space on land is invaded and made unlivable. On the other hand, when water is frozen, there is an inability to move or take action. In this case, it is difficult to resonate with hope or possibility. Lastly, when Water Element has no capacity for adaptability, perseverance, or ability to contain energy reserves, this leads to exhaustion.
The importance of Water Element’s role in the Chinese Five Element System points to the power of resilience through making space. Water carves canyons over time and creates space in moving with the flow in streams, rivers, and oceans. Water needs movement to be able to sustain life. This very movement is what makes it possible for all life and ecosystems to thrive.
Wellness and well-being thrive when there is communication between all of the five elements physically, emotionally, mentally and life/spirit purpose levels. This is your invitation to take part in harmonizing you Fire Element. Healing Your Heart with Resonance Repatterning
Healing Your Heart with Resonance Repatterning® benefits your life by creating greater openness, fullness, strength, and clarity in your life and relationships. On the Chinese Five Element Meridian Medicine Wheel, Fire Element emerges as the gateway to the kingdom of your Heart. It is an opportunity to move through places in your life where you are stuck in the area of discernment, connection to others, or feel a need to experience more joy, love, and vitality in your life. This can show up in your personal physical heart health, relationships, business interactions, or view of life on a daily basis.
Just as the heart has four chambers, there are four aspects of the heart related to creating emotional, mental, spirit, and physical level health. These four aspects focus on creating coherent health for your heart, the seat of the Supreme Controller in Chinese Medicine that rules the kingdom of your body through the heart, emotions, and mind with compassion, clarity, discernment, love, and truth so you can live your essential (spirit) truth in action.
Yin or Ministerial Fire Element Meridians
In every kingdom, there is governance whether this is a king, queen, president, emperor, etc. And, every ruler needs guidance, support, and advice. In this case, it is the minister that enhances clarity and discernment for the overall good of the kingdom.
Clear Heart
When there is clarity in your heart, the flow of energy feeds and nourishes your body-mind system. You are nourished by your inner gifts, and take guidance from this insight. This, in turn, creates the essential central feeling of trusting yourself and creates the value of resonating with trustworthiness in your relationships through discernment. In Chinese Medicine, the Small Intestines Meridian is known as the sorter, with the ability to absorb what is essential for your body and mind. If knows what to take in and what to reject through letting go.
Confusion or doubting your inner needs and wisdom can lead to the inability to act, creating isolation and disorientation as to what is nourishing for you in your life. Substituting or compensating for unmet needs with de-energizing actions, foods, self-talk, habits, and addictions makes life feel more complicated. This leads to a greater sense of depletion.
Open Heart
An open heart allows connection, love, and the ability to experience the present with a broad vision. It allows you to hear and see what is available and allows you to absorb beauty and possibility. When your heart closes, it is a signal that you are not feeling safe or trusting in life. When this is so, it is more difficult to experience life fully. This means that you are unable to take in life as well through your breath, nourishment, positive touch, and positive bonding with others. And, this is a signal that your heart needs tending.
The Shen Spirit in your Heart creates stillness, intelligence, peace, calmness, and compassion that leads to clear perception. It allows you to remain connected to the core essence of what you are in your own heart, and to connect to the Shen Spirit of another. In this way, healing can happen. (Heart Meridian)
Yang or Sovereign Fire Element Meridians
In order to function well in life on all levels, it is important to come from your center so you can respond to life, and be present in your relationships, business, and life.
Full Heart
The full heart experiences gratitude and builds this practice into daily living in whatever is seen, experienced, heard, and felt. The Heart Protector is about the physical circulation of blood physically, and pleasure, joy, and love in your day-to-day life. When your heart is full, you are magnetic and attract the possibility of connection.
When your Heart Protector Meridian energy is out of balance, you are more likely to feel disconnected from others, with a lack of safety and trust. You face a relationship. life and your goals half-heartedly. You feel out of balance with your inner self, and this shows up in the world physically as feeling more disoriented and leaning toward being accident-prone.
Strong Heart
The word, heart, in Spanish, is “corazon.” The Latin root “cor” is integral to the word courage. In this way, courage is directly related to the heart itself. Courage is more than acting in a way that implies confidence, decision, or assertion. When courage comes from the heart, it is informed with peace instead of conflict. The heart responds rather than reacts to internal fear of fight, flight, or freeze. The response is from the core of self instead of a perception of what the other person or the situation is demanding. Choice and freedom arise from internal connection to your needs considered and personal boundaries intact so you can speak your truth activated by the Triple Heater Meridian.
Making space and time is a way of making an appointment with yourself. It allows you to reconnect to your center, to be able to listen to your inner wisdom, and to consider choices. In this way, you are able to listen more deeply and get in touch with the ministerial aspect of your heart. Meditation, writing in your journal, taking a walk in nature, or talking with someone you trust are all ways to connect with your inner Shen Spirit so that you can act from the place of sovereignty.

Medical Qi Gong under Healing Blue Skies
A few summers ago I traveled to Hollyhock Educational Center in Canada to a Medical Qi Gong class taught by Dr. Steven Aung, as part of continued training as a holistic practitioner working with the Chinese Medicine and Five Element System. The class worked indoors, on the beach, in the woods, and under the beautiful blue skies of British Columbia with focused breathing, movement, and healing exercises.
Qigong (Chi Kung) means cultivating energy, it is a system practiced for health maintenance, healing, and increasing vitality. Medical Qigong accesses wisdom from the body-mind system through the Meridian System and includes working with color, sound, breathing exercises, movement, nutrition, massage, acupuncture/acupressure, and exercises that benefit your body and mind.
There are 12 interdependent meridians within the system that when in balance create greater harmony in your life. It is important to know that each of these elements is associated with color, sound, organ system, emotion, harmonizing nutrition, scent, and movements.
Not only did we practice each of these aspects in specific sequences to cleanse, balance, and harmonize our body-mind system in detailed protocols, we also had the instruction to take nurture directly from nature as a practice for wellness and well-being. In the same way that the systems of your body are interdependent, you and nature are interdependent for health and well-being.
Water Element Color
Blue is related to your kidneys and bladder and treats issues related to fear, feeling like a victim, or places in your life when you feel frozen, victimized, or overwhelmed.
Metal Element Color
White is related to your lungs and large intestines and supports you in feeling more inspired in your life, as well as supports you in letting go of that which no longer serves you.
Wood Element Color
Green is related to your liver and gallbladder and treats indecision and focus. When working with this color, it also supports nourishing the places in your life where you feel you have unfinished business that keeps you from feeling more optimistic.
Fire Element Color
Red is related to the heart, small intestines, Triple Heater, and Purple with Pericardium. Fire Element is associated with the aspects of love, joy, safety, trust, discernment, and belonging.
Earth Element Color
Earth Element is related to your stomach and spleen and is related to nourishment, gratitude, and support in your life. When you worry or feel a lack of nurture in your life, this is a place to work with this color.
With this in mind, I would like to share two simple activities that create grounding and nurture within to create functional balancing for health in the process.
Look Up at the Blue Sky
Notice that if you lie down on the green grass and look up, you have the opportunity to see blue and white. If you are surrounded by trees, you see green. If the sun is out, you get the spectral colors of yellow and red through your physical eyes. Look around your environment to find the all of the colors for the organ systems for greatest benefit. Spend a little time with each color. With intention, direct energy to the organ system you are viewing each time. Do this for 15 minutes watching the clouds and sending nourishment to all of your body-mind system.
Laugh to Heal Your Body-Mind System
This summer we walked in a continuous line that involved healing the person in front of us by directing chi towards their bladder points in their lower back while laughing. The specific walking pattern creates balance in the upper and lower body, as well as the left and right side while clearing residue within your body-mind system. It was literally a chain link to a link of people healing themselves and others through the healing vibraion of laughter. Imagine what this looked and sounded like!
The sounds for each meridian are as follows:
a) Your Heart: Haaaaaa
b) Triple Heater: hEEEE (primary temperatures of your body: brain, digestion, reproductive system)
c) Small Intestine: hAWWWW ( discerns what food will be used by the body for energy)
d) Stomach: wHOOO (digestion)
The sequence sounded like this: “Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha; He, he, he, he, he; Haw, haw, haw, haw, haw; Who, who, who, who, who.”
Now it’s not necessary to get this complex. Finding ways to laugh can be as easy as telling a joke, hearing a joke, watching a funny movie, laughing with others, and in Resonance Repatterning® doing a modality with one other person to get a belly laugh. This modality builds bonding, heart connection as well as serving as great stress relief. My Aunt Marie used to say, “Laughing massages your liver.” She was right! A family practitioner at New Jersey’s School of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Marvin E. Herring, said, “The diaphragm, thorax, abdomen, heart, lungs and even the liver are given a massage during a hearty laugh.”
Other Benefits from Laughter
- The decrease in stress hormone levels
- Strengthening of the immune system
- Muscle relaxation
- Pain reduction
- Lowers blood pressure
- Creates Cardiovascular conditioning and better flow
- Natural anti-depressant
- Increases the release of endorphins
- Creates relaxation
Here’s How
Face another person. Start by slapping your knees and bending over slightly facing the other person. Say out loud: “Ha, Ha, Ha.” You may start slowly, and this will build the momentum of laughter. Use the other sounds above to get the full benefit of treating your body-mind system. You may need tissues at the end from laughing so hard!
Here is an opportunity to continue on the path with monthly healing modalities and repatterning events from Windows to the Heart Repatterning.
